Rooks County is located in Northwest Kansas halfway between Denver and Kansas City at the eastern edge of the Great Plains. The county’s approximate 5,000 people enjoy a quality of life that is attractive to people seeking a simpler way of life.  The incorporated communities of Plainville, Stockton, Palco, Damar, Woodston, and Zurich, along with the small unincorporated community of Codell, welcome you.


It is Quiet Neighborhoods where kids can play outside, people can go for evening walks, or neighbors can visit from the front porch. Citizens take pride in the fact that the pace of life allows them to enjoy more time at home and less time in their cars.

It is Good Schools with low teacher-student ratios that allows for individual attention. Schools that allow students to excel in a safe, productive environment. In addition, the schools offer extra-curricular activities such as athletics, music, and drama to name a few. With small student numbers, everyone is given a chance to compete.

It is Downtown Shopping areas that provide close parking, friendly help, and service that you can only get in a small town. Many of the buildings reflect the areas historic past. The city of Hays is only a short drive from our area and features a wide variety of retail options.

It is Health Care Facilities that offer the latest in diagnostic services and doctors that provide the personal attention that is lacking in many larger cities. The Rooks County Health Center is a state-of-the-art facility that has gained attention across the state. With 5 full-time providers, and other part-time providers, RCH is able to offer a 6 day a week walk-in clinic called Doctors Without Delay. 

It is Entertainment!!!!!  Whether you are enjoying the local county fair, visiting one of the area lakes, or just spending an afternoon in the park, we have plenty to see and do.

The mission of Rooks County Economic Development is to further economic development by promoting the assets and resources of the county and its communities. The focus of RCED is on entrepreneurship, retention and expansion of existing business, tourism and agritourism, and leadership development.  Leading industries and employers include:  Wilken’s Manufacturing, Rooks County Health Center, Agriculture, Oil production, and Recreation.
