Tips for Cultivating Natural Spaces for Economic Prosperity

    August 12, 2024

It’s widely known that spending time in nature offers a multitude of benefits- for mental, spiritual, and physical health. Yet beyond those compelling perks, the cultivation of natural spaces has been shown to yield numerous economic benefits. Natural spaces, including parks, community gardens, green belts, outdoor recreational areas, green roofs, and permeable pavements, play a vital role in economic development. These areas attract businesses and residents alike, offering a high quality of life and a unique selling proposition for regions.

Studies have shown that proximity to natural spaces and landscaped areas can also increase property values up to 11.3% higher, translating into increased tax revenues for local governments. Meanwhile, the green industry, encompassing landscaping, maintenance, and construction of green infrastructure, is one of the fastest-growing sectors for job creation. For example, in Toronto, green roof initiatives alone have created over 125 full-time jobs related to design, installation, and maintenance. Access to green spaces is linked to improved mental and physical health outcomes, leading to lower healthcare costs, while the improved air quality and ambient benefits enhance the overall livability of a community. Economic development isn’t just about attracting businesses and creating jobs; it’s also about fostering an environment that supports the well-being of both people and the planet.
