Shop Local: Does It Really Make a Difference?
November 24, 2025
The clock is ticking and the countdown is on: gift giving is right around the corner.
This is the time of year when we all hear the words “shop local.” In fact, we hear it a thousand times. But why is it so important to communities like ours?
A recent article from Forbes noted that generationally, Boomers (80%) and Gen X (77%) were the most likely to buy from small businesses, followed closely by Millennials (70%) and Gen Z (65%).
That’s great! But does shopping local really make a difference in Western Kansas?
The Economic Impact of Small Businesses in Kansas
Reports have shown that for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, a whopping $73 remains in that community.
Compare that to the $43 that remains when purchasing from a corporate chain.
When multiplied over and over, that $33 difference has a massive impact, especially in rural areas like ours. Each of those dollars support the counties throughout Western Kansas with increased tax revenue, improved services, and a higher standard of living for all of us.
But it also has a deeper, personal impact, too. Keep in mind that almost every business started out as a small, local one. By supporting our talented makers during the gift giving season (and beyond), you’re becoming a part of their success story.
These are our neighbors, friends, co-workers, students; folks who also work tirelessly to support so many community and educational initiatives for our region.
In fact, did you know that 99% of Kansas businesses are small businesses, employing around half of our state’s private workforce? Their success is because of support from folks like you!
Local Businesses Support a Higher Quality of Life
We all know the importance of consumers supporting small businesses, but we often forget that those small businesses support us, too. It’s why buying local functions as a two way street. Everyone benefits.
It’s been noted that independent locally-owned businesses recirculate 48% of their revenue locally compared to 13% by corporate chains.
What does that mean for Western Kansas? Well, when we buy local, we increase the demand for local goods and services. When that happens, wages, profits, and jobs also get a boost.
According to the Kansas Small Business Economic Profile, small businesses in Kansas created over 2,400 jobs in just a one year period. In rural areas, our entrepreneurs and small business owners are often the primary drivers for job growth.
With such a positive impact on the local economy (and folks looking for a job), buying local is hugely important to our economic revitalization.
Dollar for dollar, when you shop local, you are directly supporting economic growth, job creation, and one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops that add a vibrant dimension to our communities.
