Growing the dairy industry in western Kansas

    October 24, 2016

The dairy industry in western Kansas has seen phenomenal growth in the last two decades. There were zero large herd dairies in the area 20 years ago. Now, there are almost 200,000 head of dairy cattle in the western portion of the state.

The region has an abundance of farmland, a favorable climate and low operational costs, which all contribute to this rise in livestock production. In addition, Kansas is the leader in the nation in wheat, sorghum grain and sorghum silage production—crops that benefit the dairy industry.
